London 2012 Olympics Events Venues
The 2012 Olympic Games is one of the most highly anticipated Olympic games of all times, especially in the UK. The main reason for the exciting in the UK surrounding the games is that they will be held in London for the first time since 1948. London is a superb city which is well equipped to host such a colossal event, and the games will be an opportunity for London to showcase itself for to the rest of the world.
Since the Olympic Games for 2012 was awarded to London in July 2005, plans have been put in place to
ensure that the impressive plans which won the city the right to host the games can be carried through in time for the commencement of the games, with the whole world watching to see how London fares in its quest. As well as the main 80,000 seater stadium which will host the opening ceremony, closing ceremony and the athletics, there are a number of other facilities which must be completed in time for the start of the games.
One of the largest constructions for the Olympic Games is the swimming pool. There must be an arena big enough to contain a 50m swimming pool, a diving pool and the thousands of people who will attend the events which take place there. This pool is being built in Carpenters road and will contain TWO Olympic size pools.
Britain have been successful in recent years when it comes to the indoor cycling, so the velodrome being built in at the Eastway Sports Centre will certainly attract a lot of attention. Another major development is the basketball arena located in the north of the Olympic Village which will hold 12,000 people. This arena is only temporary and parts of it will be moved around the country after the games as an attempt to share the legacy of the games with the rest of the country.
The tennis at the Olympic Games will be held at the Eton Manor venue which will have 9 courts and the capacity to hold 10,500 fans.
All of the buildings being created for the Olympic Games are the height of modern architecture, but one of the more distinctive buildings is the handball arena. This arena is made up of recycled clay and will certainly stand out. The venue contains retractable seating which makes it flexible in terms of the events it can hold.
